A breakdown of emergency statistics released by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency has revealed that no fewer than 173 people died in 1,156 emergencies recorded across the state in 2025.

This came as the agency said it was fully prepared to tackle emergencies across the state in the new year.

An analysis of the report obtained on Sunday showed a decline in the number of emergencies recorded in the state compared to 2024.

According to the report, 394 road crash incidents were recorded during the year, followed by 249 tanker and truck-related incidents, and 204 fire outbreaks.

On the monthly distribution of incidents, the report indicated that February 2025 recorded the highest number of emergencies with 122 cases, followed by April with 121 cases and May with 119 incidents.

The report also noted that Alimosho Local Government Area recorded the highest number of emergencies with 180 cases, followed by Eti-Osa with 144 cases and Ikeja with 139 cases.

It further read, “Between January 1 and December 30, 2025, data generated from the critical operations of LASEMA’s Pre-Hospital Care Unit revealed that 1,924 victims were rescued and resuscitated during the period under review.

“This total comprises 906 adult males, 1,003 adult females, 13 boys, and two girls.

“In the same period, the agency recorded 173 recoveries (deaths). Out of this number, 139 were adult males, 32 were adult females, while two boys were recovered dead.”

Meanwhile, the LASEMA Permanent Secretary, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said the agency was fully prepared to respond to emergencies in 2026.

Speaking at a retreat organised for staff of the agency on Friday, Oke-Osanyintolu said Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had provided the necessary support to strengthen the agency’s capacity to mitigate disasters across the state.

He said the retreat was also organised to appreciate staff for their efforts in 2025 and to re-energise them ahead of the tasks in 2026.

“Our chosen theme at this year’s off-site gathering, ‘Building a Resilient and Efficient LASEMA: Strengthening Preparedness, Response and Recovery in Lagos State,’ speaks directly to the role each of you plays quietly every day, often behind the scenes, yet critically important.

“Let me state clearly that LASEMA’s strength does not lie only in equipment, technology, or leadership titles. The agency’s strength lies in the commitment, discipline, and professionalism of its workforce, especially our junior staff,” he said.

Oke-Osanyintolu reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to disaster mitigation across the state.

“LASEMA, as the coordinating body for all emergencies in Lagos State under the leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, is prepared in terms of infrastructure and is prioritising the welfare of first responders to ensure the safety of residents.

“As much as the government is doing its part, residents must also partner with us and understand that their safety should be paramount,” he added.

He concluded by urging residents to avoid unsafe practices that could lead to emergencies.
