The President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has mocked opposition political parties ahead of the 2027 general elections, declaring that they will remain confused and disorganised until after the polls.
Akpabio also expressed confidence that the ruling All Progressives Congress would retain power in the next general election.
The Senate President spoke on Saturday in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, during a reception organised by Governor Umo Eno in honour of the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.
The First Lady was in the state to unveil the Akwa Ibom Senior Citizens Centre named after her and dedicated to the memory of Pastor Patience Eno, the late wife of the governor.
The event, which also marked the 2026 International Women’s Day, drew a large crowd and was attended by the wives of several state governors, including those of Lagos, Imo, Cross River, Delta, Ekiti, Jigawa, Kano, Nasarawa, Niger, Ogun and Ondo states.
Speaking at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, the Senate President described the opposition as fragmented and incapable of mounting a serious challenge to the APC in 2027.
He said, “While we are moving round the country consulting and campaigning, many of them are still trying to form political parties. They have not even finished registration and they will remain in confusion until the 2027 election is over.”
Akpabio added that the divisions within major opposition parties had weakened their political strength ahead of the elections.
According to him, the Labour Party, which recorded significant votes in the 2023 presidential election, is currently battling internal crises.
“You saw a man who formed Labour Party that had millions of votes. Today, they cannot muster a hundred thousand votes because the party is distressed with different factions across the country,” he said.
The Senate President also criticised the Peoples Democratic Party, saying the once-dominant opposition party had become deeply divided.
“Look at the PDP that used to be one strong party. Now they are struggling with multiple offices and several secretaries in Abuja. Who will even sign their nomination forms?” he asked.
Akpabio further dismissed threats by some opposition figures to boycott future elections over the amended Electoral Act, insisting that such moves were signs of political unpreparedness.
“If you say you want to boycott elections, it simply means you are not ready. If you were ready, you would not be talking about boycotting,” he said.
The Senate President also claimed that the massive turnout of residents at the event signified Akwa Ibom’s support for President Bola Tinubu’s second-term bid in 2027.
He said the reception organised for the First Lady reflected the state’s endorsement of the President’s leadership.
“On a day when thousands of women came out as early as 8am to receive the First Lady, it shows the love Akwa Ibom people have for the President and his administration,” Akpabio said.
He described Governor Eno as a unifying leader, noting that the state had witnessed unprecedented unity under his leadership.
Akpabio added that many residents had already endorsed the governor for a second term even before his recent defection from the PDP to the APC.
In her remarks, the First Lady thanked the people of Akwa Ibom for the warm reception and their support for the President.
She said the unveiling of the senior citizens centre reflected her commitment to improving the welfare of elderly Nigerians.
“This love is unforgettable. On behalf of the President, we will not take it for granted,” she said.
Tinubu also called for greater protection of the rights of women and girls, in line with the theme of the 2026 International Women’s Day.
Governor Eno, in his remarks, thanked the First Lady for visiting the state and unveiling the facility.
He disclosed that his administration would soon send a bill to the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly to provide legal backing for the care and protection of elderly citizens in the state.
