March 12, (THEWILL) — Iran has laid down conditions for a possible end to the escalating conflict in the Middle East, saying the way forward is through firm international guarantees, reparations and recognition of its rights.
In a statement on social media platform, X, President Masoud Pezeshkian insisted that Tehran would agree to a cessation of hostilities only if the international community provides assurances that all future attacks on Iran will permanently stop. He also called for reparations for the damages caused by the conflict and demanded recognition of what he described as Iran’s “legitimate rights”.
The president did not elaborate on the specific rights he meant, but analysts believe his remarks may relate to broader geopolitical and internal leadership issues.
Pezeshkian’s remarks come amid heightened tensions following a series of military confrontations that have drawn in multiple regional powers.
Meanwhile, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), on Wednesday, adopted a resolution condemning Iran’s attacks on Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states as well as Jordan, describing them as violations of international law and a significant threat to global peace and security.
Presented by Bahrain and backed by 135 co-sponsoring countries, the resolution was approved with 13 votes in favour, while Russia and China abstained.
In its text, the Council reaffirmed strong support for the territorial integrity, sovereignty and political independence of GCC states and Jordan, and strongly condemned the “egregious attacks by the Islamic Republic of Iran” against these countries. The resolution also condemned the targeting of civilian infrastructure, which it said resulted in civilian casualties and damage to non‑military buildings.
Bahrain’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Jamal Fares Alrowaiei, welcomed the resolution, saying it underscored the Council’s commitment to maintaining international peace and security. He expressed gratitude to all co‑sponsors, noting that the broad level of international support reflects “a collective awareness of the danger of the unjust Iranian attack against our countries”.
While the UNSC resolution focuses on condemning Iran’s military actions in the Gulf, Tehran’s leadership has been critical of the measure. Iranian officials have accused the Security Council of bias and of misusing its mandate, suggesting the resolution ignores the broader context of the conflict.
