The National Youth Service Corps has sanctioned 24 corps members serving in Sokoto State over offences ranging from absenteeism to outright abscondment.
The Sokoto State Coordinator of the scheme, Usman Yakubu Yaro, disclosed this on Tuesday during the passing-out ceremony of the 2025 Batch A, Stream I corps members in the state.
Yaro said eight of the affected corps members would repeat their service year, while 16 others had their service extended as punishment for various infractions committed during the period of national service.
He stressed that the scheme would not tolerate acts of indiscipline, particularly truancy, noting that the NYSC remained committed to upholding its standards.
According to him, “The scheme’s firm stance on discipline means acts of truancy will not be tolerated under any circumstances.”
The coordinator, however, commended the majority of corps members for their dedication and contributions to the state, adding that two outstanding members were honoured with the Sultan Sa’ad Abubakar Award for impactful community development projects.
Yaro noted that corps members deployed to rural communities played vital roles in critical sectors, especially healthcare and education, helping to bridge service gaps across the state.
He also urged the outgoing corps members to remain worthy ambassadors of the scheme, emphasising the need to utilise the skills acquired during their service year amid rising unemployment and the scarcity of white-collar jobs.
The NYSC official further appreciated the support of the Sokoto State Government under Ahmed Aliyu for prompt payment of allowances, as well as the continued backing of the Sultan of Sokoto for youth development initiatives.
The ceremony marked the completion of the one-year mandatory national service, with a call on corps members to uphold the ideals of discipline, patriotism, and national unity.
