A former Board of Trustees Secretary of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, Buba Galadima, has disclosed that Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso will on Monday formally exit the African Democratic Congress and announce a new political platform ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Galadima, a close ally of Kwankwaso, made this known on Saturday during a stakeholders’ meeting of the Obi-Kwankwaso Movement held in Abuja.
His disclosure comes amid growing uncertainty within the ADC, following protracted legal disputes over the party’s leadership, which have unsettled supporters of both politicians.
Backers of the duo under the Obi-Kwankwaso Movement had earlier insisted that their principals must seek an alternative platform to remain competitive in the 2027 race.
The development also follows claims by the Kwankwasiyya movement that Obi and Kwankwaso were already concluding arrangements to join the Nigeria Democratic Congress, a newly registered political party.
According to the group, the two leaders and their associates had commenced the signing of necessary documents alongside party leaders, including Senator Dickson, to facilitate their defection.
“All is now set. Both Obi and Kwankwaso will announce their defection from the ADC on Monday,” the group had stated.
Addressing supporters, Galadima warned of imminent political attacks against the duo once their new platform is unveiled, urging loyalists to prepare for what he described as coordinated media and social media offensives.
“As from Monday, when our leaders declare on which platform they will run, one of two things will happen. They will sponsor columnists and deploy social media influencers to attack our candidates,” he said.
He charged supporters, particularly those active on digital platforms, to respond forcefully to any criticism, while maintaining restraint until provoked.
Galadima further alleged that opposition figures in the country were facing systematic repression, including harassment and detention by security agencies, as well as the weakening of opposition parties.
He listed parties such as the SDP, PDP, ADC, NDP and PRP as among those he claimed had been “decimated” in recent times.
The NNPP chieftain also warned of a possible escalation in political tensions, alleging that desperate actors might resort to extreme measures against opposition figures.
Also speaking at the meeting, businessman Isaac Fayose expressed support for the proposed alliance, describing it as a viable alternative capable of winning the next general election.
Similarly, activist Aisha Yesufu called for unity among Nigerians, urging citizens to rise above ethnic and regional divisions in pursuit of national progress.
“It is time for us to become a nation that works,” she said, stressing the need for collective responsibility and inclusive politics.
Efforts to get official confirmation from Obi and Kwankwaso on the planned defection were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
