Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has emphasised the critical role of faith-based institutions in promoting communication for development and addressing the growing social and moral challenges confronting young people across the state.
The Governor made the call during a Sunday service at ECWA Headquarters Church, Jos, on May 3, 2026, where he underscored the urgent need for renewed value orientation and stronger engagement with the younger generation. He described the church as a strategic partner in shaping societal values, influencing positive behavioural change, and fostering peace and unity within communities.
Governor Mutfwang acknowledged the security challenges affecting parts of the state, particularly the recent unrest in Mangu Local Government Area. However, he stressed that beyond physical insecurity, Plateau State is also facing deeper social and developmental concerns that require collective action.
Speaking on the recent incident in Mangu, where some young men were attacked and killed, resulting in tension and a temporary blockade along the highway, Governor Mutfwang expressed sympathy to all those affected and prayed for healing, peace, and reconciliation in the affected communities.
In a passionate appeal to church leaders, the Governor warned against the growing disconnect between the church and younger generations.
“We are quietly losing a generation. The church needs to return to internal evangelism. We must re-evangelise the church,” he said, noting concerns that some youths involved in violent unrest were influenced by drugs, misinformation, and social disorientation.
Governor Mutfwang stressed that the role of the church must go beyond preaching to practical engagement, mentorship, counselling, and rehabilitation.
“When it comes to rehabilitation, the church must step up. We must go beyond the pulpit. Youth fellowship platforms must rise to the challenge. This is about saving a generation,” he added.
The Governor also expressed concern over rising cases of child trafficking and exploitation. He revealed that security agencies recently intercepted about nine children allegedly being transported to Lagos, describing the development as disturbing and one that cuts across several local government areas.
He called for stronger collaboration among communities, faith-based organisations, parents, and security agencies to protect vulnerable children and safeguard the future of society.
Governor Mutfwang further drew attention to the plight of young girls in some mining communities, where exploitation and abuse remain prevalent. He urged the church to intensify advocacy, mentorship, and grassroots engagement aimed at protecting and empowering vulnerable groups.
In his remarks, Reverend Dr Gideon Para-Mallam encouraged the Governor to remain steadfast in his commitment to development and good governance.
“God brought you here as a development governor. Please continue to use every available legal resource to develop Plateau State,” he said.
“Go out there, bring government closer to the people, and clearly communicate the vision of this administration,” he added.
Delivering a sermon titled “Keep Your Lamps Burning,” drawn from Luke 12:35, the ECWA Assistant General Secretary, Rev. Dr Sunday Congo, called on believers to remain spiritually alert, disciplined, and committed to righteous living.
“Be dressed and ready for service, and keep your lamps burning,” he said, explaining that Christians must remain prepared, devoted, and active in service to God at all times.
He urged believers to avoid the works of the flesh, uphold holiness, and remain steadfast in faith and service.
The service brought together government officials, church leaders, and members of the public, reinforcing the strong connection between faith, leadership, and collective responsibility in addressing societal challenges and promoting sustainable development in Plateau State.
