Obasa impeachment saga: I nearly lost my job over Desmond Elliot issue – Gbajabiamila
Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu, Femi Gbajabiamila, has revealed how a political crisis in the Lagos State House of Assembly nearly cost him his job after he was drawn into the controversy surrounding the attempted removal of Speaker Mudashiru Obasa.
Gbajabiamila said President Bola Tinubu almost sacked him after suspicions linked him to developments during the heated impeachment drama that rocked the Lagos Assembly.
He spoke on Thursday while addressing members of the All Progressives Congress, recounting how his relationship with some lawmakers, particularly Desmond Elliott, came under scrutiny during the crisis.
According to him, the tension peaked when the Lagos Assembly attempted to remove Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, a move that was later reversed following intervention from President Tinubu.
Gbajabiamila explained that the President summoned him to his residence in Abuja after receiving intelligence reports suggesting that some of his associates were involved in the unfolding political manoeuvre in Lagos.
“He said he heard that Desmond was my boy, the one we gave you,” Gbajabiamila recounted, adding that he clarified his position and informed the President that Elliot was not part of any destabilising group within the Assembly.
However, he said the President insisted that intelligence available to him indicated otherwise, heightening suspicions around the crisis.
The Chief of Staff further disclosed that the situation escalated after his meeting with the President, leading him to contact Elliot directly to clarify his alleged role in the impeachment plot.
He said he later urged the lawmaker to publicly deny involvement in the saga to clear the air, but such clarification was not issued.
Gbajabiamila added that the situation took a new turn when operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) reached out to him, warning that his name was being mentioned in connection with the crisis.
According to him, he was accused of backing the impeachment attempt and allegedly supporting a faction within the Assembly, allegations he firmly denied.
He maintained that he had no role in the political conflict and had only acted to clarify issues when his name was dragged into the controversy.
The Lagos Assembly crisis, which briefly threatened stability in the state legislature, was eventually resolved after political interventions, restoring Obasa to his position and easing tensions within the chamber.
