ASUU Threatens Nationwide Strike, Gives FG Four-Day Ultimatum On Lecturers’ Pay

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a stern warning to the Federal Government, threatening to embark on an industrial action if the newly approved salary structure for university lecturers is not implemented within four days.

ASUU President, Christopher Piwuna, disclosed the ultimatum on Thursday while delivering a public lecture in Bauchi State.

He noted that the agreement, reached in December 2025, was supposed to take effect from January 2026 but has yet to be enforced.

“We have issued a four-day ultimatum from today to the Federal Government to commence payment of the newly approved salary structure. Failure to comply will attract a strong response from the union,” Piwuna stated.

The union leader also criticised the government’s approach to higher education, particularly the plan to establish a branch of Coventry University in Nigeria, describing it as counterproductive to the development of local institutions.

This development compounds existing labour tensions in the country. ASUU recently instructed some members to withdraw services over unpaid salary arrears, while other federal workers have threatened nationwide industrial action over unresolved wage disputes.

The union’s move is expected to intensify pressure on the government to meet its obligations to university lecturers and address broader concerns within the education sector.
