David Abu, Co-Founder and Lead Strategist at Data Community Africa and Senior Technical Product Marketing Manager at Microsoft, is shining a spotlight on DataFestAfrica, the continent’s fastest-growing data conference, as a foundational pillar in Africa’s digital transformation.
Speaking at a recent industry forum, David described the annual event not just as a conference—but as a continental movement with a mission.
“DataFestAfrica isn’t just a gathering. It’s a movement,” David said. “We created it to democratize data literacy and to ensure African professionals have a real voice in global conversations around data, AI, and emerging tech. That vision is now a reality.”
Since its founding in 2022, DataFestAfrica has become a vibrant hub for data talent and innovation. It has hosted over 5,000 in-person attendees, garnered 15,000+ livestream views, and featured 120+ expert speakers from across Africa. The event’s reach is amplified by partnerships with major technology players, including Microsoft, Uber, Paystack, and DataCamp.
As a key strategist behind the initiative, David has positioned DataFestAfrica as a bridge between global technology advancements and the localized realities of African economies.
“Africa doesn’t just need access to tools—we need relevance, context, and community,” he explained. “That’s what DataFestAfrica offers: a space where African data professionals connect, co-create, and champion solutions that actually work here.”
Under David’s leadership, Data Community Africa has grown into one of the largest grassroots tech collectives on the continent. With over 25,000 followers on Twitter, 6,000 on LinkedIn, and an active Discord network of 3,000+, the community is shaping Africa’s next generation of data leaders.
It’s not just about buzz—it’s about impact. Over 50 community members have landed jobs through DataFestAfrica’s mentorship and visibility programs, proving that community-led development can directly translate into economic empowerment yearly .
“We’ve tried and make sure we raised money through programs , hackathons and events from forward-thinking companies,” David noted. “Every naira, dollar, or cedi we receive is reinvested into the community—supporting events, mentorship, education, and inclusion.”
The festival’s success is powered by an ecosystem of over 70 volunteers and 13 executive leaders, all contributing to the seamless execution of the event and its satellite programs. These include hands-on webinars, and monthly meetups, ensuring that the learning and community-building don’t stop once the main event ends.
“We’re not a once-a-year event—we’re a year-round engine for change,” David said. “Every month, we’re bringing people together to sharpen skills, exchange ideas, and drive transformation.”
Looking ahead, the 2024 edition of DataFestAfrica explored how was AI’s role in African economies, with deep dives into governance, ethics, and locally built AI models.
“Africa isn’t playing catch-up,” he asserted. “We are innovating on our own terms. DataFestAfrica proves that when given the platform, African professionals don’t just participate—they lead.”
Reflecting on the journey, David described co-founding DataFestAfrica as one of the most meaningful milestones of his career.
“It started with a belief that community could unlock the continent’s potential. Today, that belief is being validated at scale—and we’re just getting started.”
He closed with a call to action for governments, institutions, and private stakeholders to treat data as a national asset, one that holds the key to Africa’s economic and social growth.
“We need infrastructure. We need policy. But most of all, we need belief—belief that Africa can shape its digital future. DataFestAfrica is that belief in motion.”
