Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr Wale Edun, has praised the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) following a rebound in Nigeria’s crude oil production to 1.84 million barrels per day (mbpd), marking a notable recovery from lower output levels recorded in the past two months.
Speaking during a visit by the Commission’s Chief Executive, Mrs Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan, to the Federal Ministry of Finance in Abuja on April 2, 2026, Edun described the current production level as encouraging and aligned with the Federal Government’s economic objectives.
“It is heartening that you can tell us that you are doing 1.84 million barrels per day. That is fantastic news and totally in line with the mandate of President Bola Tinubu,” Edun said, urging the Commission to sustain the momentum and push towards the 2mbpd target.
Nigeria’s oil output had experienced fluctuations in February and March, largely due to operational disruptions and maintenance activities on key facilities. However, the latest figures suggest a steady recovery, with production now approaching recent highs after dipping below optimal levels in the preceding weeks.
While describing the on-going crisis in the Middle East as unfortunate, Edun noted that the directive to ramp up production predated the geopolitical tensions, emphasising the administration’s focus on boosting revenue through increased output.
Earlier, Eyesan confirmed that daily production had risen to 1.84 mbpd, expressing confidence that output would continue to improve in the coming weeks.
“We are doing 1.84 million barrels per day. That is a remarkable feat, but I am sure we will do more,” she said.
She attributed the earlier dip in production to “unfortunate incidents” affecting critical infrastructure, as well as scheduled turnaround maintenance, noting that these challenges have now been resolved.
