Former Governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, has revealed his role in the emergence of President Bola Tinubu during the 2023 general elections, even as he expressed concern over what he described as the declining ideological direction of the ruling All Progressives Congress.
Fayemi, who spoke during an interview on State Affairs, a podcast hosted by Edmund Obilo, said while he supported Tinubu’s presidential bid, the party they collectively built had strayed from its founding principles.
The former Minister of Mines and Steel Development also described the unexpected surge of the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the last election, Peter Obi, as a political phenomenon that altered Nigeria’s traditional electoral dynamics.
Reflecting on the 2023 polls, Fayemi said Obi’s rise signalled a disruption of long-standing power structures and underscored growing public discontent with mainstream political parties.
“I helped Tinubu to become president, but the APC has lost its bearing, and Peter Obi is a phenomenon,” he stated.
He warned that Nigeria’s democracy could be endangered if the prevailing winner-takes-all approach to governance persists, stressing the need for a more inclusive political system that accommodates diverse interests.
Fayemi further called for urgent reforms within political parties, including the conduct of transparent primary elections and a renewed commitment to internal democracy.
He also reiterated his longstanding position on the restructuring of Nigeria’s federal system, arguing that decentralisation remains key to addressing the country’s governance and development challenges.
The ex-governor’s remarks come amid growing concerns over internal divisions within the APC and increasing calls for political realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections.
