The 2023 presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, has reaffirmed his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election.
In an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday, Sowore confirmed he remains in the race, stating that his party will hold its primaries next week.
When asked whether he would be the sole candidate, the activist deferred the decision to the party.
“Well, let the party decide who their candidates are,” he said.
Addressing the ongoing digital membership registration exercise directed by the Independent National Electoral Commission, Sowore said the AAC has not yet submitted its final register.
He referenced a recent court judgment that permits political parties to reopen their registration portals.
“We haven’t finally submitted, and that’s what this court judgment says. So if you have submitted now, the court says you can reopen your portal and start again,” he explained. “But we never stopped anyway.”
Sowore highlighted the AAC’s role in digital registration, noting that the party began online membership registration in 2018, before other parties adopted the practice.
He also claimed that during the 2022 registration exercise, the AAC was the only party that submitted a complete party register to INEC.
Speaking on politics and presidential elections generally, the activist argued that prominent politicians, including President Bola Tinubu, Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Seyi Makinde, and Rotimi Amaechi, have contributed to cycles of poverty, insecurity, pain, and suffering in the country.
Sowore, a well-known activist and publisher of Sahara Reporters, has positioned himself as a radical alternative in Nigerian politics.
His 2023 presidential outing under the AAC banner recorded minimal votes nationally.
Supporters often view his repeated candidacies as a consistent challenge to the political establishment and a voice for change.
Critics, however, view it as largely symbolic or protest-driven rather than electorally viable.
