The Federal Government has approved a comprehensive upward review of allowances and welfare benefits for civil servants, in a move aimed at boosting morale and improving service delivery across the public sector.
The Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Didi Walson-Jack, disclosed this on Friday during a press briefing in Abuja, stating that the reforms were endorsed by the Federal Executive Council.
She explained that the review covers workers under the Consolidated Public Service Salary Structure and the Consolidated Research and Allied Institutions Salary Structure, ensuring that both junior and senior officers benefit from the adjustments.
According to her, the revised peculiar allowances have been structured to apply across all grade levels, with a guaranteed increase in earnings for civil servants nationwide.
Walson-Jack added that key allowances, including Duty Tour Allowance, estacode, and book allowance, have been significantly increased as part of the new policy.
She noted that nearly all allowances captured under the Public Service Rules are being reviewed upward.
In a notable shift, the government also approved full Duty Tour Allowance for civil servants attending official training programmes, regardless of whether such training involves travel.
“Even if a worker attends training within their duty station, they are entitled to 100 per cent DTA,” she said.
On retirement benefits, the Head of Service announced the introduction of a new exit package for civil servants under the contributory pension scheme.
The package guarantees 100 per cent of a retiree’s total annual emoluments as a lump sum, in addition to their pension benefits, with effect from January 1, 2026.
She described the initiative as a deliberate effort to ensure dignity and financial stability for retirees.
“No public servant should leave service without adequate financial support,” she said.
Walson-Jack further revealed that the Federal Government has operationalised the Employee Compensation Scheme to provide financial protection for workers in cases of job-related injury or death.
The reforms are part of broader efforts by the government to reposition the civil service, enhance productivity, and improve the welfare of its workforce.
