The Bishop of the Diocese of Kwara, Anglican Communion, Rt. Rev. Sunday Adewole has called on Nigerians to return to godly living, warning that the nation’s lingering economic and security challenges are rooted in declining moral values.
Delivering his Easter message at the Cathedral of Saint Barnabas on Sunday, the cleric said the resurrection of Jesus Christ should inspire both personal transformation and collective national renewal.
Speaking on the theme “The Empty Tomb and Its Implications,” Adewole described Easter as a season that demands more than celebration, urging citizens to reflect deeply on their spiritual lives and responsibilities to society.
“Today, as we commemorate the resurrection of Jesus Christ, we appeal to everyone, in the name of God, to live a holy life. Living a holy life is a precursor to God’s abundant blessings,” he said.
The bishop stressed that righteousness must be accompanied by love for others and a commitment to nation-building, noting that Nigerians have a duty to promote peace and unity across communities.
“We should love our neighbours, pray for our country, pray for our state, pray for our communities, and love others as ourselves. If we do this, the challenges we face will become things of the past,” he added.
Adewole, who is also the Kwara State Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria, directly linked the country’s socio-economic hardship and insecurity to the erosion of spiritual and ethical standards, insisting that a renewed fear of God could reverse the trend.
“If Nigerians truly embrace the fear of God, issues such as corruption, violence, banditry, and insurgency will be drastically reduced,” he said.
He further warned that disunity along ethnic and religious lines continues to hinder national progress, urging citizens to see themselves first as one people.
“No nation can progress in disunity. We must come together as one people if we are to confront our challenges effectively,” the bishop stated.
Against the backdrop of economic difficulties facing many households, Adewole also encouraged Nigerians to be compassionate and proactive in supporting the less privileged.
“We must not wait until we are asked before helping others. Let us be intentional in offering our time, talents, and resources to support those around us,” he advised.
Offering prayers for the nation, the cleric expressed optimism that Nigeria would experience healing and transformation through divine intervention.
“It is our prayer that the power that brought Jesus out of the grave will work in our nation, in our families, and bring the needed miracles,” he prayed.
He urged Nigerians not to lose hope, maintaining that faith in God, unity among citizens, and obedience to divine principles remain key to overcoming the nation’s current challenges and building a more peaceful and prosperous future.
Similarly, the Ewi of Ado Ekiti, Oba Adeyemo Adejugbe, has called for prayers for the peaceful conduct of the Ekiti State governorship election and the forthcoming general elections in Nigeria.
Adejugbe, in a message made available in Ado Ekiti on Sunday, congratulated Christians on the occasion of this year’s Easter celebration.
The monarch urged Nigerians, particularly the people of Ekiti, to “take a cue from the virtues of forgiveness, love, selflessness, and tolerance in relating with one another, as exemplified by the life of Jesus Christ.”
He noted that the Easter season signifies God’s love for humanity. “This season is the celebration of the promise of eternal life. I urge well-meaning members of society to show more love and give hope to the hopeless in the spirit of the season,” Oba Adejugbe said.
The monarch also highlighted the challenges facing the country, describing them as a phase that requires fervent prayers and the attention of governments at all levels, especially in tackling the menace of insecurity.
He prayed for blessings and strength for everyone to share in the joy of the resurrection, which he said should be reflected in peaceful coexistence across the nation.
