The Ogun State chapter of the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has called for fairness and inclusivity in the political succession plan as the tenure of Governor Dapo Abiodun gradually winds down.
In a statement issued on Monday, August 4, 2025, and jointly signed by the state chairman, Alhaji Jimoh Tajudeen Alao, and the secretary, Alhaji Olaleye Rasheed Damilare, the group insisted that justice and historical precedence demand that a Muslim succeed the incumbent governor, who is a Christian.
While commending Governor Abiodun for what it described as his inclusive leadership and his role in protecting Muslim rights—particularly his defence of the use of hijab in public schools—MURIC maintained that the principle of equity must guide the next political transition in the state.
“We are lovers of peace and progress, but don’t expect development and unity to thrive in a state of injustice such as what we are witnessing in Ogun State,” the group stated.
MURIC recalled the political atmosphere during the end of Governor Ibikunle Amosun’s tenure in 2019 when he, a Muslim, endorsed another Muslim, Hon. Adekunle Akinlade, as his successor.
According to the group, many stakeholders rejected that move on the grounds that “a Muslim cannot succeed a Muslim,” a position it said was accepted by the Muslim community in the interest of balance and fairness.
“That sentiment ushered in the current administration under Prince Dapo Abiodun, a Christian. By that same logic, it is only fair that a Muslim now succeeds him,” MURIC said.
The rights organisation called on qualified Muslims across Ogun State to step forward and declare their interest in the governorship race, stressing that Muslims are not short of capable and visionary leaders.
“Leadership must be open and inclusive. We strongly believe that Muslims, too, have credible and highly qualified individuals who are fit to lead.”
Reaffirming its stance against political partisanship or religious extremism, the group said it remains committed to peace, equity, and dialogue.
“Let it be known that MURIC Ogun is not playing politics, but advocating for fairness, equity, and justice for all,” the statement concluded.
MURIC’s intervention is expected to stir political discourse in the state, where zoning and religious balance often influence electoral decisions and alignments.
