Nollywood actress and producer Theophlia Akpati has called for stronger efforts to promote Nigerian films globally, noting that the industry has continued to grow in visibility, creativity, and international acceptance.
Speaking on the current direction of Nollywood, Akpati said Nigerian filmmakers are now producing content that can compete on global platforms, especially with the rise of streaming services that have opened new opportunities for African stories to reach wider audiences.
She began her career as an actress, featuring in films such as Okoro the Prince, Finding Love, Lies Are Beautiful, Dear Affy, Mimi, Jagun Jagun, and Farmer’s Bride.
She noted that many of these films have gained audience attention beyond Nigeria, showing the increasing demand for Nollywood content internationally.
Over time, she expanded her work in the industry by moving into film production.
Her producing credits include Blind Spot, Finding Messiah, Ring of Deceit, Fate, and Honeymoon Palava. She explained that working behind the camera has given her a deeper understanding of storytelling, planning, and production management.
Akpati said her experience as an actress has helped her connect better with other performers on set, making collaboration smoother and improving the overall quality of productions she is involved in. She added that Nollywood can grow faster if more creatives take on multiple roles within the industry.
She also emphasised the need for better investment in storytelling, script development, and post-production.
According to her, these areas are key to ensuring that Nollywood films meet international standards and attract more global attention.
Akpati further noted that Nollywood’s strength lies in its unique cultural stories, which set it apart from other film industries.
She encouraged filmmakers to remain authentic while also improving technical quality to appeal to a wider audience.
As Nollywood continues to expand its reach across Africa and beyond, Theophlia Akpati remains committed to building her career as both an actress and producer while contributing to the industry’s growing global presence.
