Some princes from Oyo town have dragged the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, before the Oyo State High Court, seeking orders to restrict his public appearances and official conduct over what they described as actions unbecoming of the revered stool.
In the suit marked HOY/18/2026, the claimants — Ladigbolu Adegboyega, Owoade Tesleem, Adeyemi Adesina and Adeyemi Adebayo — asked the court to compel the monarch to enter an appearance, either personally or through counsel.
They are seeking a perpetual injunction restraining the Alaafin, “by himself, servants, privies or any other person whatsoever,” from attending events or functions they claim are not befitting the status of what they called the symbolic traditional head of the Yoruba race.
The princes also urged the court to bar the monarch from acting in any traditional or official capacity that would render him “subservient or inferior to any Oba in Yorubaland,” while asking for far-reaching declarations on the status and authority of the Alaafin’s stool.
According to court documents, the claimants want judicial affirmation that the Alaafin of Oyo is not only a symbol of unity among the Yoruba but also the paramount ruler and appointing authority over all chieftaincies in Oyo town, as well as Oyo North and South.
They further argued that the stool of Alaafin is of “great historical importance not only in Yorubaland but also in Nigeria, West Africa and beyond,” insisting that its dignity must be preserved.
The court directed that Oba Owoade may enter an appearance either personally or through his lawyers by filing the appropriate processes at the court registry or transmitting same by registered post.
The suit comes amid heightened tensions surrounding the role of traditional rulers in modern governance and the symbolic leadership of the Alaafin within Yorubaland.
In January, the Eselu of Iselu Kingdom in Yewa North Local Government Area of Ogun State, Oba Akintunde Akinyemi, publicly cautioned the Alaafin against what he described as a confrontational posture towards government policies, particularly in reaction to Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde’s decision to introduce a rotational chairmanship of the State Council of Obas.
In an open letter, Akinyemi warned that state governments retain constitutional powers to install or depose traditional rulers found guilty of insubordination or disobedience to existing laws.
He described as inappropriate the Alaafin’s reported criticism of the policy on social media and in newspaper publications shortly after the inauguration of the council, especially claims that he was not consulted.
While acknowledging the historic status of the Ooni of Ife and the Alaafin of Oyo as symbolic heads of the Yoruba race, Akinyemi said Nigeria had moved beyond an era where traditional rulers exercised governmental authority.
“My candid advice to His Imperial Majesty is to withdraw the press release and refrain from further comments in the media so as not to incur the wrath of the Oyo State government,” he stated.
The court case is expected to test the boundaries between traditional authority, public conduct and state oversight of royal institutions in Yorubaland.
