Rivers Assembly Suspends Impeachment Move Against Fubara, Deputy After Tinubu’s Intervention

The Rivers State House of Assembly has suspended impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, in what appears to be a dramatic turn in the protracted political crisis rocking the state.

The decision was taken on Thursday during the Assembly’s resumed plenary in Port Harcourt, where lawmakers adopted a motion halting the impeachment process.

The development followed a high-level political intervention by President Bola Tinubu, who recently met with Fubara; the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike; and key leaders of the Assembly in Abuja.

Though details of the closed-door meeting were not made public, sources familiar with the discussions said the President urged all parties to embrace reconciliation in the interest of peace and stability in Rivers State.

The impeachment move had heightened political tension in the oil-rich state, deepening the rift between Fubara and his predecessor, Wike, whose loyalists dominate the Assembly.

Observers say Thursday’s decision signals a possible truce between the feuding camps and may mark the beginning of the end of months of political brinkmanship that had threatened governance and security in the state.

As of the time of filing this report, neither the Speaker of the Assembly nor the governor had issued an official statement detailing the terms of the suspension.

Political analysts, however, caution that while the halt in proceedings may calm immediate tensions, the durability of the peace will depend on sustained dialogue and adherence to any agreements reached during the presidential intervention.

The latest move is expected to reassure residents and investors who had expressed concern over the instability in one of Nigeria’s major economic hubs.
