The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project has issued a seven-day ultimatum to Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, demanding the public disclosure of officials allegedly implicated in the reported missing ₦200tn from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited.
SERAP, in a letter dated March 21, 2026, urged Akpabio to direct the Senate Public Accounts Committee to immediately publish the names and designations of all those linked to the alleged financial discrepancies, regardless of their political or social standing.
The group also called for the full disclosure of details surrounding the ongoing probe, including audit reports, financial records, official correspondence, and timelines for the appearance of affected officials before the panel.
The Senate committee is currently investigating claims that about ₦200tn could not be accounted for in the NNPCL’s books between 2017 and 2023, amid concerns over unreconciled figures and missing documentation.
In the letter signed by SERAP Deputy Director, Kolawole Oluwadare, the organisation stressed that transparency in the probe was critical to ensuring accountability and restoring public confidence.
“Full disclosure of the ongoing investigation is essential to prevent political interference and allow Nigerians to independently scrutinise the facts,” the group said.
SERAP warned that failure to act within the stipulated timeframe would compel it to initiate legal proceedings against the Senate leadership in the public interest.
It added that the magnitude of the alleged missing funds, coupled with longstanding concerns about opacity in the NNPCL’s operations, underscored the need for a thorough, impartial, and time-bound investigation.
The organisation further expressed concern over delays in the probe, noting that repeated failure of some officials to honour invitations by the committee had slowed progress and weakened public trust in the process.
According to SERAP, prolonged delays risk the loss or distortion of critical evidence and could create the impression of a cover-up or political compromise.
The group also urged the committee to publish complete records of its proceedings, including minutes, submissions, and evidence, to enable independent scrutiny by Nigerians and oversight institutions.
It said, “There is a legitimate public interest in ensuring that all discrepancies are fully examined and that those responsible are identified and held accountable.”
The development is expected to heighten tensions between the National Assembly and the NNPCL, amid growing public demand for transparency in the management of Nigeria’s oil revenues.
