President Bola Tinubu has expressed sadness over the killing of soldiers of the 29 Task Force Brigade, Operation HADIN KAI, following a coordinated terrorist attack on their camp in Benisheikh, Borno State.
In a statement on Thursday signed by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President described the fallen troops as “our unforgettable heroes” and extended condolences to the military and families of the victims.
The Defence Headquarters confirmed that the attack occurred early Thursday, resulting in casualties among the troops.
Tinubu said the soldiers “fought valiantly to repel the terrorists and ensure that Boko Haram could not overrun the communities they protect,” adding that their sacrifice would not be forgotten.
“From the reports I have received, our armed forces have been conducting sustained, intense land and air offensives against the insurgents, neutralising many of their fighters and commanders. The insurgents’ counterattack is a sign of desperation,” he said.
The President condoled with the families of the deceased, noting, “I extend my condolences to the families of our gallant soldiers, led by Brigadier-General Oseni Omoh Braimah, who made the ultimate sacrifice in the defence of our country.”
He urged troops not to be discouraged by the incident, saying, “Do not lose heart, do not be weary, do not be discouraged. Our officers and men should continue to serve with honour, courage, and patriotism.”
Tinubu also assured all that the Federal Government would continue to support the Armed Forces, stating that “the government will always stand by the Armed Forces, provide more of the equipment needed and ensure the welfare of all who risk their lives for our safety.”
He further called on Nigerians and the media to back the military in its operations, urging them to “desist from celebrating or condoning the attacks against our troops,” stressing that “these soldiers are our heroes; unforgettable and irreplaceable.”
The President also extended condolences to the government and people of Borno State, pledging continued collaboration to achieve “total victory and lasting peace.”
The attack in Benisheikh highlights the persistent threat of insurgency in Nigeria’s North-East, where troops have battled Boko Haram and its splinter groups, including the Islamic State West Africa Province, for over a decade.
Reports indicate that the assault on the military base led to the death of Brigadier-General O.O. Braimah and several soldiers, with vehicles and buildings destroyed during the attack.
The incident marks the second killing of a senior military officer in recent months, following the death of Brigadier-General Musa Uba in November.
