Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has resigned from the Federal Executive Council to pursue his governorship ambition in Bauchi State ahead of the 2027 general elections.

His resignation was confirmed on Monday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs through its spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa.

It was gathered that Tuggar submitted his resignation letter to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu shortly after noon, formally stepping down from the cabinet.

Findings indicated that the former minister is set to contest the Bauchi State governorship election on the platform of the All Progressives Congress.

Tuggar’s exit is coming barely days before the March 31 deadline issued by the Federal Government for political appointees seeking elective offices to resign.

The directive, conveyed through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, affects ministers, heads of agencies, and presidential aides intending to participate in the 2027 polls.

The order is anchored on Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026, which mandates public office holders to vacate their positions before engaging in partisan political contests, in a bid to prevent abuse of office and ensure a level playing field.

Tuggar’s resignation adds to the growing list of top government officials repositioning for the 2027 elections, signalling an early wave of political realignments across the country.
