Nigerian author Ndifreke Ukpong has announced the forthcoming release of his novel, A Visit of Karma, scheduled for June 29, 2026, offering a narrative that examines the consequences of broken promises within intimate relationships.

Ukpong said the novel is driven by concerns about what he described as a persistent disregard for the impact of unfulfilled commitments, particularly promises of marriage.

“It’s quite unfortunate that some people still don’t believe karma is real,” he said, noting that the story seeks to explore how actions can produce consequences over time.

Ukpong, known for writing in accessible language while addressing emotionally complex themes, continues his focus on love, betrayal and accountability in the new work. According to him, the novel reflects situations that are common in society but are not always openly discussed.

Set in a rural Nigerian community, A Visit of Karma follows the story of Eyeno and Etoro, two young people whose relationship begins during their school years. The pair develop a close bond and make a promise to marry, a commitment that becomes central to the trajectory of their lives.

The narrative takes a turn when Etoro leaves the village after receiving an opportunity in the city. Before his departure, he reassures Eyeno of his loyalty and asks her to wait for his return. The promise, however, becomes strained as time passes and circumstances change.

According to the storyline outlined by the author, Etoro eventually breaks his vow and marries another woman while living in the city. Eyeno, unaware of this development, remains in the village and continues to reject other suitors, holding on to the belief that Etoro will return to fulfil his promise.

Through these events, the novel examines the emotional consequences of betrayal and the enduring effects of misplaced trust. Ukpong said the story is structured to highlight how personal decisions, particularly those involving honesty and commitment, can have far-reaching implications.

“The novel shows the repercussions of our wrongdoings,” he said, adding that while the work is fictional, it draws from realities that resonate with everyday experiences.

Observers note that promises of marriage often carry significant weight in many communities, shaping expectations and influencing personal choices. When such promises are broken, the impact can extend beyond the individuals directly involved, affecting families and social relationships.

Ukpong’s narrative places these issues within a broader reflection on accountability. By focusing on the experiences of Eyeno and Etoro, the novel raises questions about responsibility, trust and the long-term consequences of individual actions.

At approximately 60 pages, A Visit of Karma is presented as a concise work, with the author indicating that the length allows for a direct and focused exploration of its themes. He noted that the aim is to present a clear storyline without unnecessary complexity, enabling readers to engage with the subject matter more easily.

While the novel does not claim to offer definitive answers, it presents a scenario that invites reflection on the nature of promises and the effects of failing to uphold them. Ukpong maintains that storytelling can serve as a way to examine such issues in a manner that is both accessible and thought-provoking.

The novel is expected to be released in the coming months, with June 29 already fixed as its publication date. As anticipation builds, attention is likely to turn to how readers engage with its depiction of trust, betrayal and consequence. Ukpong, known for his earlier work A Future in Chains, returns with a narrative that continues his focus on human relationships and the effects of individual decisions.
