The management of Bayero University, Kano (BUK), has expelled 57 students for their involvement in various forms of examination misconduct.

The university’s Senate also ordered the rustication of eight students for lesser infractions, while two others were cleared after investigations exonerated them. One case was deferred pending further probe.

The decisions were reached at the Senate’s 427th meeting held on Wednesday, and ratified in line with the institution’s General Examination and Academic Regulations (GEAR) and other relevant policies.

A statement issued by the Director of Examinations, Admissions and Records (DEAR), Dr. Aminu Wada Kurawa, stressed that the measures were part of BUK’s “zero tolerance for academic dishonesty.”

“This decision is a reflection of the university’s unwavering commitment to academic excellence, discipline, and the enforcement of regulations,” the statement read.

The expelled students cut across several faculties, including Education, Engineering, Allied Health Sciences, Social and Management Sciences, Environmental Sciences, and the School of Postgraduate Studies.

Under the sanctions, the rusticated students will serve suspensions ranging from one to two semesters depending on the severity of their offences.

Meanwhile, the Senate cleared two students, Sani Sani Aliyu and Saratu Bala Hussain, of any wrongdoing after investigations absolved them of involvement in examination malpractice.

The case of another student, Yusuf Muhammad Sani, from the Faculty of Engineering, was deferred, with the Senate awaiting the outcome of a probe by the Student Behaviour Committee.

The university urged students to acquaint themselves with the rules guiding examinations and academic conduct to avoid facing similar penalties.

“While management remains supportive of students’ academic pursuits, it will not hesitate to apply the full weight of institutional regulations when necessary,” the statement added.

The full list of sanctioned students was published alongside the announcement.
