The Editor of Platform Times, Daud Olatunji, has delivered a compelling lecture to mass communication students at D.S. Adegbenro ICT Polytechnic, offering insights into the evolving challenges and opportunities in contemporary journalism.
Under the theme, “Practical Steps Towards Combating Challenges in Journalistic Endeavours,” the event, tagged “A Day With the Pen Professional,” attracted students, lecturers, and the leadership of the polytechnic to the campus along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, Itori.
During the lecture, Olatunji dissected the impact of digital transformation on journalism, noting that while technology has broadened audience reach and storytelling tools, it has also heightened risks such as misinformation, economic pressures, and declining editorial standards.
He urged students to prioritise accuracy and integrity over speed, cautioning that succumbing to shortcuts in reporting could undermine both personal credibility and public trust. “Journalism today demands resilience, discipline, and an unwavering commitment to truth,” he told the audience.
Speaking after the lecture, the polytechnic’s rector, Prof. Goke Rauf, encouraged students to embrace the lessons from the session.
He also pledged to expedite the establishment of the department’s radio studio, aimed at enhancing practical training and positioning the institution to produce media professionals who can compete nationally.
The lecture provided students with a rare opportunity to engage directly with a leading media practitioner, bridging the gap between academic training and real-world journalism.
