A former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, John Odigie-Oyegun, on Tuesday drew laughter from delegates at the African Democratic Congress national convention in Abuja after mistakenly referencing his former party while addressing attendees.
Oyegun, who defected from the APC to the ADC in 2025, had barely begun his speech when he exclaimed “APC” before quickly correcting himself to “ADC,” prompting amusement across the hall.
Realising the slip, the former Edo State governor paused and asked, “No, no, did I just say APC?”—a remark that further heightened the light-hearted mood at the event.
Reacting, former Kogi West senator, Dino Melaye, jokingly told Oyegun to “seek refuge from the devil,” drawing more laughter from party faithful.
Oyegun, in response, said he would need a strong “purgative” to rid himself of what he described as lingering APC reflexes, underscoring the humour surrounding the moment.
The incident, captured in a now-viral video, quickly gained traction on social media, attracting thousands of views within hours of the convention.
Despite the gaffe, Oyegun used the platform to reiterate the ADC’s readiness to challenge the ruling party in the next general election.
He declared that the party was positioning itself to take over power at the federal level in 2027.
“We are ready for this struggle. We are ready to take over Aso Rock, and it is not going to be business as usual,” he said.
The ADC chieftain also dismissed criticisms over his past role in the APC, insisting that the opposition party has assembled credible leadership capable of steering Nigeria in a new direction.
Oyegun, who led the APC between 2014 and 2018 and played a key role in its formation, has since emerged as a prominent figure within the ADC, contributing to strategic party activities, including its manifesto development.
His remarks at the convention come amid growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections, with opposition parties intensifying efforts to challenge President Bola Tinubu and the ruling APC.
