The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has attributed the recent wave of insecurity across parts of the country to political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections, insisting that the situation is being “engineered to distract” President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Akpabio made the remarks on Tuesday in Abuja during the inauguration of the Nigerian Revenue Service (NRS) corporate headquarters.
According to him, the spate of attacks and violence being recorded in some regions would subside shortly after the elections, claiming that such incidents are often politically motivated.
“You are seeing insecurity today; it’s even increasing because the election is coming,” the Senate President said. “As soon as the election is over, watch out for the first two weeks; you won’t hear any bomb blasts because people are sponsoring to distract you (President Tinubu).”
His comments come amid renewed security concerns in parts of the country, including recent deadly attacks and a controversial airstrike in Yobe State that reportedly claimed civilian lives near the Borno border.
The Senate President also dismissed suggestions that Nigeria is sliding into a one-party state, arguing that opposition parties lack cohesion and structure to challenge the ruling party.
He maintained that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) continues to expand its influence across the country, citing defections of governors to the party.
“They don’t know what else to do. They say this man is too good in many areas,” he said, adding that the APC now controls “almost 32 governors out of 36 states.”
Akpabio further criticised opposition figures, referencing remarks by the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, who had suggested he might leave the African Democratic Congress (ADC) if its primaries become compromised.
He questioned the stability of opposition platforms, saying: “So where do we belong? How do you win elections when you don’t know how to structure? No political party today is stable in this country.”
He also took a swipe at the opposition’s electoral strength, claiming inconsistency in leadership and strategy had weakened their political standing.
In addition, Akpabio defended the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Joash Amupitan, over alleged partisan comments circulating on social media, insisting the remarks were being misinterpreted.
He urged Nigerians to remain patient with the Tinubu administration, praising ongoing reforms in the economy and tax administration, particularly the leadership of the chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service transition team.
Akpabio also lauded the reforms of Bola Tinubu, saying the administration’s policies were attracting support across states and strengthening national governance structures.
Present at the event were top government officials, including governors, lawmakers, and security chiefs, as well as members of the executive and legislative arms of government.
The newly inaugurated NRS headquarters is a 16-storey complex designed to accommodate about 3,000 personnel following the transformation of the Federal Inland Revenue Service into the Nigerian Revenue Service under a new law signed in 2025.
