A former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Dr. Tunde Lemo, on Wednesday formally declared his interest in the 2027 Ogun State governorship election.

Lemo made his intention known while participating in the All Progressives Congress ward congress at Ward 12, Ita-Agemo, Isale-Igbein, Abeokuta, where he was received by party faithful.

The accomplished banker said his aspiration was driven by a desire to accelerate grassroots development and unlock the vast agricultural potential of Ogun State through purposeful leadership.

According to him, the state is richly endowed but requires strategic governance to maximise its resources for the overall benefit of the people.

“I don’t want to canvass personal position here, but my presence underscores that the APC is an organic party. You can see the crowd; we are members of one family. There is no rancour. We are strong and vibrant,” he said.

Lemo, however, left little doubt about his ambition, declaring, “Yes, of course, I have my eyes on 2027 just like everyone else, but everything is in the hands of God.”

He assured party members of loyalty and pledged to run an inclusive government if given the mandate.

The former apex bank chief attributed the peaceful conduct of the ward congresses in the state to what he described as the transformative impact of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

He said the congresses were aimed at consolidating unity within the party structure ahead of subsequent national processes.

Lemo also commended Governor Dapo Abiodun for what he termed the state’s developmental strides, particularly the establishment of the agro-cargo airport, which he noted had secured approval to commence commercial operations.

He added that governance should be about “raising the bar and ensuring the best for our people,” stressing that leadership must translate to measurable improvements in the lives of citizens.

The declaration positions Lemo among early contenders expected to jostle for the Ogun State governorship ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections.
