2027: I Can’t Be VP To Anyone, Says Matthew Hassan Kukah

The Catholic Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, Matthew Hassan Kukah, has dismissed speculations linking him with a possible vice-presidential slot ahead of the 2027 general elections, declaring that he has no intention of seeking political office.

Kukah, who spoke during an appearance on The PAP Show, said his vocation as a Catholic priest remains superior to any political ambition, stressing that he would not abandon his spiritual calling for public office.

There had been insinuations in some quarters that the outspoken cleric could emerge as a running mate to Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the next presidential election.

However, the bishop firmly ruled out such a possibility.

“Do I look like somebody who can be running mate to anybody? Why will I run for the presidency?” he asked.

He added, “I have something that is more than the presidency. My priesthood is more than anything you can offer. Tinubu cannot offer me a ticket.”

Kukah maintained that his commitment to the Church and his spiritual responsibilities outweigh any attraction to political power, noting that the idea of contesting for office or serving as vice-president does not align with his life’s mission and personal convictions.

The cleric, known for his interventions in national discourse, reiterated that no political offer could rival the sacred obligation of his priesthood.

His comments come amid early permutations and political alignments ahead of the 2027 elections, as key actors begin consultations across party lines.
