Despite the ongoing back-and-forth between the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU and the federal government over withheld salaries, e be like say solution no dey sight for the palava wey university workers dey face. ASUU, wey dem sabi for always dey yan about better conditions for education sector, especially the koko about making public universities beta and reviewing lecturers’ salary and allowances, dem see setback last week as National Industrial Court (NIC) commot their matter against Minister of Labour and Employment and Accountant General of the Federation.

The matter wey dey ground follow ASUU eight-month strike for 2022, when federal government talk say dem go apply ‘No Work, No Pay’ policy. NIC agree for government side say make ASUU no continue the strike until dem settle the main matter. But when ASUU members show for work back for November 2022, dem shock as government talk say dem go pay only half salary for 18 working days for October based on the ‘No Work, No Pay’ policy.

President Bola Tinubu waka talk say make dem do partial waiver for ‘No Work, No Pay’ order with condition join, so ASUU members go fit collect four months out of the eight months wey dem hold dia salary. But ASUU no gree sign the agreement, talk say e be like ‘slavery,’ wey dey show say negotiation process still get wahala.

Based on the recent court ruling, ASUU UNN branch chairman, Comrade Nobert Oyibo Eze talk say government never reach out to the union about the eight months wey dem hold salary. E yan say the political people wey dey control, dem no get the masses for mind as dem dey use politics play for education funding, and e yan say if the courts no dey do the right thing, e go hard for the country.

The whole situation show say the bigger matter dey Nigeria education sector, where wahala still dey for funding and workers dey face financial jaga-jaga. ASUU still dey yan say make dem address the koko issues wey dem carry come, say if dem no do am, the matter fit dey on and off, wey e go dey affect development for education.
